Staffing and key activity
As from Thursday 9th February 2012, Sarah Jassal (Sub Regional Dance Development Officer and Dancescape project manager) will be on maternity leave and will return at the beginning of August 2012.

Cathryn Goodwin has been contracted as a Project Manager on a freelance basis to manage Dancescape’s project commitments through to the summer. Cathryn will be working 2 days per week to specifically work on the following projects:

Movin’ On Up dance careers event – Saturday 24 March, 12-4pm at Stratford-upon-Avon College
Outdoor Dance Programme (led by DanceXchange) – bringing ‘Spill – a playground of dance’ to parks in Coventry, Chelmsley Wood, Solihull, Kenilworth and Warwick, and ‘Breathe the Beat’ roadshows to Leamington and Solihull
Boys Dancing (led by Warwick Arts Centre) – managing a team of Apprentices who are working alongside professional male dance artists across the region to develop their dance leadership skills whilst creating The Quiet Man Suite, a suite of 6 films, with groups of boys and young men
Dancescape enews – keeping the sector and audiences informed of opportunities to take part and see dance in the sub region throughout the Spring and Summer
Rugby Youth Dance Company – supporting the company’s leaders and members in a range of activity, including their part in Godiva Awakes, the large scale Cultural Olympiad project led by Imagineer Productions
Supporting the realisation of a number of other projects such as Motionhouse’s The Voyage/Quest, Sampad’s Moving Earth, Dance Sansaar’s Lawk Naach and SMBC’s Neighbourhood Sports’ JumpTG.

Cathryn will be based at Solihull Arts Complex on Wednesdays until the end of July and can be contacted by email, dancescape@solihull.gov.uk (active from 9 February), or by phone on 0121 704 6747. Cathryn’s other working day will be more flexible in order to attend meetings etc.

Dancescape closure
It’s with great regret that in addition to giving advance warning of lots of exciting opportunities for dance in 2012, we also have to announce the end of Dancescape in August 2012.

Project funding has always been an issue for the long term security and development of Dancescape as an externally funded project, and the Dancescape Management Group have explored a number of different models and options over the last 7 years in order to secure Dancescape’s future with the aspiration of developing Dancescape into an organisation. Therefore, as we have been unable to secure funding for long term sustainability and development, the project will come to an end.

Dancescape legacy
We’re very proud of Dancescape’s achievements since the project was set up in 2005; especially of the development of a unique ethos and approach to career and professional development for young people, young leaders and emerging and professional artists. Therefore, when Sarah Jassal returns for one month in August it will be to create a Dancescape legacy document that we hope will chart Dancescape’s own journey over the last 7 years, celebrate its key achievements and projects and handover its ethos through a set of case studies, so that anyone working in the sector can benefit from its approach and values.

There will be an event in Autumn 2012 where you will be invited to celebrate Dancescape with Sarah Jassal, Dancescape Management Group members, partners and funders, and take away your copy of the legacy document.

If you would like to contribute to the Dancescape legacy document with your thoughts on how Dancescape has contributed to the dance sector over the past 7 years, or how it has supported your career or involvement in dance, we’d love to hear from you. 2012 is set to be an exciting and memorable year for Dancescape, as we see the finale of all our projects and the end of Dancescape itself. Dancescape and Dance Box enews, Facebook pages and blogs will continue to keep the dance community up to date with news and opportunities along with performances, workshops and special events, and all of those opportunities that the 2012 Dancing for the Games climax will bring – plenty of opportunity to keep dancing and make 2012 a memorable year for everyone!

Home as part of International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012
2 April – 13 May 2012

Home is a bold, inventive new participatory production that will animate public spaces across Birmingham city centre. Home will be an evolving promenade-style performance event, engaging thousands of people as audiences and participants.
Based on the themes of home, belonging and identity and what it means to each of us, the work will be developed using ideas, inspirations and choreographic material contributed by a 1000 individuals. Shaped by Director, Andy Brunskill, the project will have huge cast taking part, all performing on individual doormats which becomes an individual stage.

International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) is a major biennial festival produced by DanceXchange (dx) in partnership with Birmingham Hippodrome. One of the largest dance festivals in the world, IDFB is unique in its diversity and internationalism, programming exceptional dance from across the globe and fostering new collaborations with international choreographers and artists. Animating the city and capturing the imagination, IDFB brings a remarkable line-up of outstanding dance to venues and public spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands and creates a wealth of engaging participatory activity for people of all ages.

Performer requirements:
Versatile and quirky male and female dancers. This commission takes place in public spaces (indoors and outdoors) so this new production requires performers who are willing to work in a non-traditional theatre environment with experience and confidence. Performers must have a strong technique as well as improvisation and contact skills. Additional skills, such as acting, physical theatre, street performance, playing an instrument or singing would be an advantage and can be used in this work. Candidates must be available for the dates as listed below and be willing to relocate Birmingham for the duration.

If you’re in the early stages of your dance career, this is an extraordinary opportunity to work alongside and be mentored by our Motionhouse dancers. You will create and perform material for The Voyage, a major outdoor spectacle to open the London 2012 Festival in the West Midlands. Opportunities with Motionhouse for The Voyage and Quest

The Voyage: An Extraordinary Performance Event Celebrating London 2012

Motionhouse will be creating a major outdoor spectacle performance to open the London 2012 Festival in the West Midlands. The London 2012 Festival will span the entire country for 12 weeks, celebrating the Olympics from midsummer’s day 21 June, until 09 September 2012.

Motionhouse will be collaborating with world-renowned aerialists Legs On The Wall from Australia on The Voyage, a vivid, visual and extraordinary performance that will celebrate the courage and imagination that prompts us to embark on journeys in pursuit of our dreams. An enormous ship will sail into the centre of Victoria Square, Birmingham, docking itself beside the city’s Town Hall from 21 – 24 June 2012. High above the people who gather to look at this marvel, dancers and aerialists appear in the ship’s rigging – the voyage begins. Professional performers will join forces with a huge amateur choir, live musicians and over 140 community performers to transform the Square and tell our story.

In the run up to The Voyage Motionhouse will be running an extraordinary participatory project called Quest which could offer you the chance to be part of The Voyage. From March 2012 they’ll be creating material with 8 groups from across the West Midlands. The groups will then go on to perform in The Voyage. Quest performers include groups from Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), Solihull Youth Dance Company, Stratford College, Nova, Coventry PAS Youth Dance, Playbox Theatre and an Adult Performance Group based in Motionhouse's Spencer Yard studio. Quest Performance Group
Motionhouse will create an adult performance group to perform in The Voyage and are looking for enthusiastic and committed people to join. The group will meet weekly to devise material alongside Motionhouse dancers and will then go onto perform in The Voyage. If you have some dance experience this is for you! The group will include dance teachers and students (age 16+), local dancers and anyone who would like to have this amazing opportunity to perform. You will meet weekly for a two and a half hour session at the Motionhouse Studio in Leamington Spa, on Sundays, from March to May. There will then be additional weekend rehearsals in June plus dress rehearsals and the performances themselves, which are Thursday 21 June – Sunday 24 June 2012. Home is a bold, inventive new dance production that will move through the streets of Birmingham city centre as part of IDFB 2012. We are looking for 1000 individuals to contribute towards the creation of, and be involved in, the performances that will take place between 23 April & 13 May 2012.

Take Part
You can take part in this ambitious project in a number of ways. By contributing through dance, spoken word or written text, by taking part in a Home workshop and creating a performance to perform live in the city centre, or by attending an Open Day at DanceXchange.
Home can only happen with the help of individuals and communities from the West Midlands and beyond! Make a contribution on home, identity and belonging and be part of this flagship project.

Workshops
We have a team of Home tutors who are busy delivering workshops to community groups in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Workshops are happening now until 16 March 2012 – do you have a group (of any age or ability) who would like to have a workshop? Participants work with a tutor to create their own response to the project that will contribute directly to the final performances.

Free dance workshops as part of Dance Sansaar

Join Dance Sansaar on an amazing journey towards London 2012 through FREE Dance Workshops suitable for all

Dance Sansaar, through 'Dancing for the Games', is offering FREE 1hr discovery workshops of 'Lawk Naach' (Punjabi folk dance), which is a mixture of Bhangra and Giddha dance moves, between January and end of March 2012. Please see the e-flyer and video link below for more details about this exciting project which is inspired by London 2012*.

The dance workshops are adaptable for all ages and abilities and are educational, inspiring, team-building and really great fun! The ideal number of participants per workshop is around 25 (this can include staff, support workers, volunteers, friends/family of colleagues/group members/students also) - please still do enquire if you have less than this. If you have more than one group of 25ish members then more than 1 free workshop can be delivered. Half day bookings are available.

There is the option afterwards for participants to perform in an exciting 'once in a lifetime' large scale event in central Birmingham in June 2012 (date tbc) through FREE performance classes taking place April-June!

Elektro Kif at Warwick Arts Centre

The anarchic Parisian streetdance group Elektro Kif are popping and locking at Warwick Arts Centre this March as part of a national tour and is inviting dancers to compete in an exciting digital dance competition.

The Trust provides grant funding to help individuals and organisations of exceptional ability in the UK who would not otherwise be able to carry out an artistic project or activity without financial support.

Maximum Value: £ 5,000

The Fidelio Charitable Trust is provided and administered by the Fidelio Charitable Trust and is for educational institutions and third sector organisations active in the UK. The Arts Grant is intended to support talented individuals or groups who are unable to reach their potential without financial support.

In particular, the programme wishes to fund work in the following areas:
Dramatic arts
Operatic arts
Music
Speech
Dance

Deadlines for receipt of applications: 1 February, 1 June and 1 October each year.

Key Criteria:
Applications are accepted on behalf of individuals and groups who are practitioners or performers in the Arts as well as institutions and colleges providing opportunities for those studying, practicing or performing.

Proposed grantees must be recommended by an appropriate person in an institution, college, arts festival or similar organisation that can vouch for the abilities of the applicant.

There is no upper age or nationality restriction and the work for which money is sought may be overseas but the proposed recipient(s) must be based in the UK.

Eligible Expenditure:
The Trust welcomes applications in support of the Arts, in particular the dramatic and operatic arts, music, speech and dance.

Grants may be awarded to enable individuals or groups of exceptional ability to:
receive special tuition or coaching, eg in the case of musicians, to attend Master Classes;
participate in external competitions;
be supported for a specially arranged performance; or
receive support for a special publication, musical composition or work of art.

Restrictions:
Applications from individuals or groups seeking support for themselves will not be accepted.

Dance Student Placements on the Outdoor Dance Programme

DanceXchange is offering 4 student placements working on a project as part of Dancing for the Games – Outdoor Dance Programme.

DanceXchange (dx), in partnership with Regional Dance Agencies DanceFest, Dancescape and Dudley Performing Arts, is leading on a substantial new Outdoor Dance Programme created for public spaces around the West Midlands from Summer 2011 to the end of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Autumn 2012. The project forms a major strand of the Dancing for the Games programme, connecting people with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games through dance.

PLAYGROUND (working title) is an exciting commission by renowned Australian Artist, Shaun Parker (of Shaun Parker Company) created specifically for parks, taking dance to the heart of the region’s communities. This imaginative new work will use existing children’s playground equipment as the set, creating a family-friendly performance piece that can be toured to playgrounds across the West Midlands. It will also attach to a variety of existing local/community events including fetes, fairs and festivals where possible.

Dance student requirements:
The Outdoor Dance Programme is offering placements to four male or female dance students. Students must be exclusively from or based in the West Midlands and must be undertaking or have recently undertaken a dance based course or dance training. This placement is aimed at students looking to develop their own performance and choreographic techniques and styles.

This two week placement will provide the opportunity to take part in morning class, partner one of the four professional dance artists and shadow the rehearsals whilst gaining an insight into the development and choreographic stages of this quirky site specific dance piece. The four dance students will be allocated specific time slots during the two weeks to work together to create a performance piece, based on what has been learnt, which will be performed in an outside location prior to the professional performance on Monday 7 May at Cannon Hill Park.

Students who are interested in taking part in this opportunity are invited to come and take part in an open day led by Shaun Parker on Saturday 29 October where you can learn more and be shortlisted to take part.

Candidates who are successfully selected for this placement must be available and consent to the details below.

The Community Grant Fund is provided and administered by the Royal Leamington Spa Town Council. Funding is intended to support voluntary and community organisations that have one-off projects that would benefit the community, or a large number of residents, of Royal Leamington Spa.

Key Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:

Be a not-for-profit organisation.

Have a constitution and/or articles of association.

Have a bank account in the name of the organisation.

Projects must:

Be located in the Parish of Royal Leamington Spa.

Benefit a significant number of people living within the Parish of Royal Leamington

Freelance Dance Coordinator Brief:

Dance Connected are offering a freelance dance coordinator opportunity to a recent graduate or an experienced freelancer who is interested in gaining valuable experience in the dance sector. Working with the Dance Development Officer, the coordinator will have the opportunity to learn about aspects of the dance development programme for Staffordshire and assist in the co-ordination of ‘Get Dancing’, the Staffordshire Dancing for the Games project.

This is a part-time position with normal working hours Monday - Friday however occasional weekend and evening work may be required. Starting in October 2011 the freelance opportunity will be for 9 months until July 2012.

Learning Opportunities:

The co-ordinator will gain valuable experience of working on the dance development programme as well as the ‘Get Dancing’ project for Staffordshire which includes:

- Supporting dance artists with the practical delivery of the Get Dancing project as a shadowing artist.
- Assisting with planning schedules and co-ordination for meetings, events and projects.
- Undertaking marketing duties including preparing copy for websites and news items and updating social networking sites i.e. twitter, facebook, dancing for the games blog and vimeo.
- Assisting the Dance Development Officer in researching and identifying, venues for residencies as well as identifying existing dance and socially excluded communities.
- Promotion of the Get Dancing programme via e-flyers, press releases, posters and displays.
- Preparing and sending out newsletters about opportunities and events to the dance database.
- Day to day administration duties including dealing with phone calls, e-mail enquiries, updating databases.
- Assisting with evaluation systems as part of the Get Dancing project including questionnaires, surveys and compiling statistics of participation and attendance.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

- A dance qualification to degree level or equivalent training in dance.

African Dance and Drumming workshops for adults in Birmingham

Revival is about creating a sense of celebration and excitement about African Caribbean culture through dance and music, involving adults across the city of Birmingham. KS1 & 2 Teachers Dance Training Year Two

This project requires 4 professional dance artists based in the West Midlands.

Project description
Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Councils are currently working in partnership with DanceXchange and Youth Dance England to develop, support and champion dance for children and young people within the sub-region.

During November 2011 to March 2012, teachers who deliver dance in primary schools across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin will attend a training program run by Mel Knott, a professional trainer working for the National Dance Teachers Association.

This is the second year the training programme is being run. The training will provide the teachers who attend the skills to plan and deliver high quality dance experiences for their pupils.

The programme requires dance artists to work with between six and seven primary schools. They will work in partnership with the teachers who have attended the training course, supporting them in planning, delivering and evaluating their dance classes. This support will help to ensure the teachers feel confident in delivering high quality dance within the national curriculum.

Requirements:

- Dance training to higher education level or at least 2 years experience working in primary schools. This can include part-time work, i.e. one hour a week for 2 years (Essential).
- Experience in facilitating the creativity of young people (Essential).
- Experience in using dance to explore issues and themes (Essential).
- Experience of teaching dance as part of the PE National Curriculum (Desirable).
- Completed Dance Links Training or equivalent Education Training (Desirable).
- Have choreographic experience (Desirable).

All applicants must be interested and committed to the project and meet all the requirements listed.

Project timetable / Commitments:

Artists must be available to attend all of the following dates

1) Dance Artist Training Session and Introduction to the Project –
on: Wednesday 2nd November 2011 from 11.00am to 1.00pm at the Birmingham Hippodrome.

2) Attend three training sessions with participating schools on the following dates:
Wednesday 16th November 2011 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm (Training Session One, Venue TBC)
Wednesday 18th January 2012 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm (Training Session Two, Venue TBC)
Wednesday 21st March 2012 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm (Training Session Three, Venue TBC)

3) From January to March 2012, support between six and seven primary schools in school time.

Dance artists are to spend five hours working in each school; this time will be allocated as follows:
- Planning
- Delivery
- Evaluation

Fee
The Dance Artists will be paid £35 per hour, for the work in schools and attending the four training sessions. This fee is inclusive of all expenses, no additional payment will be paid for travel etc.

The artists will be appointed on a freelance basis and will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions.

Wriggle Dance Theatre is a new and ambitious Northamptonshire based professional company, specialising in dance performance for children.

The company have recently been awarded funding from Arts Council England to undertake a two phase project of research and development in order to create a high quality, interactive dance performance, and investigate opportunities for imaginative participation for children and their families.

Wriggle are looking for a dancer to join the company initially for the Research and Development and production phases with the possibility of a future national tour, subject to funding.

Experience needed:
The person should have a real interest in making work for young children, and be experienced and willing to work creatively including through improvisational techniques.
The person should have a strong dance technique and performance background and have experience with children.

Rugby Youth Dance Company (RYDC) sessions take place every Thursday during school term time, 6–7.30pm at Avon Valley School in Rugby. The company has now been established for 2 years, and is led by experienced community dance artist and choreographer Alexis Haines. Alongside local and regional performances, Rugby Youth Dance Company are currently taking part in Godiva Awakes, a large scale performance event as part of the London2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Dancescape is offering a recent dance graduate/emerging artist the opportunity to become the Assistant Leader at RYDC, working with Alexis to experience how a youth dance company operates on a weekly basis, including creating choreography, improving technique and rehearsing dance for performance.

The Assistant Leader will need to:
· Have a dance degree, or relevant experience.
· Be able to attend Rugby Youth Dance Company sessions every Thursday between 6-7.30pm at Avon Valley School, Newbold Road, Rugby.
· Have a strong interest in working in dance with young people, and developing your skills to deliver high quality dance with other groups or companies in the future.
· Be willing to lead parts of the sessions with the company, following discussion with the leader.
· Have, or be willing to undertake, a CRB Disclosure at Enhanced Level.
· Ideally, possess Public Liability Insurance with cover of up to £5million.

As this is a professional development opportunity as part of Dancescape’s The Journey, the successful applicant will be provided with a Mentoring Agreement and Record of Learning in order to record their key observations and skills development.

London 2012 has announced a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of one of the largest events ever staged in the UK, performing in front of a live audience of 70,000 and a broadcast audience of more than one billion people.

Artistic Directors, Danny Boyle and Kim Gavin are searching for 10,000 volunteer performers to fill roles as dancers, percussionists and general all-round performers in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

To be eligible you must be aged 18 years or older on 1 March 2012 and able to meet the commitments for rehearsals. Performing opportunities for Under 18s will be facilitated through a separate process, with details to be announced at a later date.

Previous performance experience is not required; Ceremonies Volunteer Performers simply need lots of enthusiasm, personality, a positive attitude, huge amounts of energy and a willingness to perform in front of a stadium audience and to millions of people around the world. However, to deliver Ceremonies of this scale to a world audience a substantial commitment is required. You must be able to participate in
Up to two auditions that will take place evenings and weekends in November and early December of this year;
Up to two or three rehearsal sessions each week of up to four hours per session from March 2012, and a number of all day rehearsals in the three weeks leading up to each Ceremony.

Choreographer and dancer Joe Moran leads Questioning Dance, an investigative choreographic workshop arising from his renewed enthusiasm for movement and dance within choreographic practice. In his work Joe is currently considering the apparently mutually exclusive relationshipbetween 1) choreographic formalism and conceptually driven dance and 2) full-bodied, unmediated dancing. This workshop is intended to be a laboratory opportunity to explore these concerns. It is open to choreographers, makers and dancers with a strong interest in the creation and development of movement. Questioning Dance will investigate detailed somatic approaches to develop movement, as well as techniques to analysis, test and refine movement. It will also question how we shape and extend material through choreographic structuring.

Moving Between will explore space and support; attention and action; form and freedom. Independent dance artist Lucia Walker brings her interest in the way movement exploration, awareness practices and play can provide a ‘common language’ which lies beneath different cultural experiences and styles of dance. This weekend intensive offers dancers an opportunity to connect to their own dancing, to connect to physical forces such as gravity and momentum, and to move and play.

HOME as part of International Dance Festival Birmingham

Home is a bold, inventive new participatory production that will animate public spaces across Birmingham city centre. Moving through the streets and squares of Birmingham city centre, Home will be an evolving promenade-style performance event, engaging thousands of people as audiences and participants and presenting a diversity of dance styles.

Based on the theme of ‘home’ and what it means to each of us, the work will be developed using ideas, inspirations and choreographic material contributed by a 1000 individuals.

The project is funded by Dancing for the Games, as part of the International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012 programme.

International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) is a major biennial festival produced by DanceXchange (dx) in partnership with Birmingham Hippodrome. Animating the city and capturing the imagination, IDFB brings a remarkable line-up of outstanding dance to theatres, streets and public spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands and creates a wealth of engaging participatory activity for people of all ages. Already one of the largest dance festivals in the world, IDFB is unique in its diversity and internationalism, programming exceptional dance from across the globe and fostering new collaborations with international choreographers and artists.

DanceXchange is looking for a Director to work alongside the artistic team for HOME and realise the vision for this inventive street performance.

How it works:
There will be a cast of 6 professional dancers (and up to 15 apprentices) who will be employed for a total of six week, three weeks creation and three weeks performance (and continuing creation/rehearsal). As well as the dancers creating the material, there will be six Choreographers appointed to create 6 individual set pieces of work. The role of the Director is to pull the material and vision in to a cohesive street performance, with assistance from the Rehearsal Director. The whole project will be overseen by Creative Director, David Massingham and managed by a Project Manager/Producer.

The aim is to have a huge cast taking part and performing in the project. An education team of 3 Dance Leaders and the Rehearsal Director will deliver workshops to a 1000 participants from targeted groups within the West Midlands, who will then take part in the on-going performance alongside up to 1000 individuals who have been inspired by the project and created their own material at home in-order to take part. Personal solos donated through uploaded films may enable participants to contribute without performing in the live event.

The Director:
The Director may be a choreographer but could equally be a theatre director who has movement experience or even a visual artist. It will be the role of the Director to watch (pre-recorded or live) material that has been generated (primarily dance, but also open to music, poetry, drama etc) and unite it together into an evolving promenade-style performance taking place over a three week period, ending in a mass finale.

The Director must be confident working site-specifically (or in outdoor spaces), and have experience of directing a large-scale performance and managing a multifaceted event.

Dance Transformations: Developing Choreographers

Dance Transformations is a two-year inclusive artist-led development programme in the West Midlands, for emerging dance artists to explore choreographic ideas, led by Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company.

The Symposium is an opportunity for dance artists, teachers, researchers, project managers and arts leaders to come together to find out more about the unique approach and processes of the Dance Transformations programme and how this might inform your own professional practice. We will discuss the broader issues that are impacting on inclusive dance companies and individual dance artists with and without disabilities, with the aim to identify a committed group with ability to influence sector development. We will be asking ‘what does it mean to be an independent disabled dance artist with ambitions to create work in the current climate?'

The day will include sharing of interim film and research, presentations of work in progress by the Transformations artists and an opportunity for open discussion. A panel of experts in the field of inclusive dance will participate in the day to stimulate thought about the broader context for inclusive dance in the UK. The panel includes Luke Pell, Head of Learning and Development, Candoco Dance Company; Lisa Craddock, Programme Manager, Professional Development, Foundation for Community Dance; and Louise Portlock, Education Associate, Gloucestershire Dance.

Dance Transformations is managed and delivered by Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company in partnership with Coventry University’s ICELab; (Institute for Creative Enterprise) and with the support of DanceXchange (dx), all of whom have a stake in providing enhanced opportunities for disabled dance artists in the region. Ultimately Dance Transformations aims to provide a unique environment that empowers emerging artists to investigate dance making.

Dance Transformations is a Dancing for the Games project inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands.

Having been shortlisted by the BBC, Warwick Arts Centre is currently welcoming applications from male recent dance graduates and emerging artists for a BBC Dance Fellow during 2011 and 2012, to be supported by the BBC Performing Arts Fund.

Full details of the activity planned as part of the Dance Fellowship are attached.

Interested applicants should:
• Be a recent dance graduate or someone with equivalent years of practical dance training/an emerging dance artist/professional.
• Be male
• Have an interest in dance performance and choreography processes
• Have dance performance experience, either as part of training, independently or commercially
• Knowledge of contemporary dance techniques
• Possess or be willing to undertake a CRB Disclosure at Enhanced Level
• Be willing to work alongside and be mentored by 3-4 dance professionals for the duration of the Fellowship
• Be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people; children through to fellow professionals
• Be able/willing to travel to locations in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire by own or public transport

The successful Fellow will receive a per diem of £20 for every day they are at Warwick Arts Centre and their travel and accommodation will be covered also (to a maximum of £60 for each visit). The Fellowship will consist of 38 full days and 6 evenings at Warwick Arts Centre between October 2011 and July 2012.

Digital Futures in Dance: National Conference explores the use of digital technologies in dance performance and choreography.

The event will be held at Pavillion Dance in Bournemouth and will commence with evening performances followed by two days of installations, discussions, papers, working groups and further performances. The event will bring together artists, development organisations, promoters, producers, venues and academics to discuss the future possibilities for dance and technology. The conference will offer examples of gaming technologies, animation, immersive environments, interactive scenographies, online and screen based platforms, second life, social technologies and thought-driven reality simulation.

With an increasing fluidity between forms and spaces and a growth in interdisciplinary practice, Digital Futures in Dance investigates how new digital technologies like infrared motion capture cameras, mobile technologies, interactive gaming like Wii and Kinekt, tracking devices and advances in mixing software create new conditions for choreographing and presenting dance.

The conference is structured around three interrelated themes:

The Expanded Stage: Traditional performance spaces become interactive and immersive environments. Multi-platform distribution is increasing through the use of iPods, phones, media players as well as more traditional media. The distinctions between stage, screen and bodies are increasingly fluid and permeable. What will be the stages for dance in the future?

New Body Intelligence: Artists increasingly use data from measurements of the body as raw material for choreography. The possibility to collect data and simulate the body’s actions through sensors to track external movements as well as through live-feeds of bio-physical data like brainwaves and blood pressure, opens new possibilities to conceptualise and choreograph the dancing body. How will new intelligence of the body influence choreography in the future?

Social Interaction: Mobile and interactive technology devices contribute to the development of dispersed choreographies. Game playing and site-specific performance give new creative agency for audiences and radically change notions of authorship. How will increased interactivity influence the creation and reception of dance in the future?

The Dance Development Group for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (DDG) is looking for exceptional dance artists to join the team of artists involved in Get Dancing! a Staffordshire wide project for the Cultural Olympiad.

The DDG is offering choreographic commissions to produce a range of performance based dance projects in various locations across Staffordshire under the artistic direction of Filip Van Huffell, Artistic Director, Retina Dance Company through an artistic mentorship programme.

Working in one specified location in Staffordshire, Dance artists will devise and produce a series of workshops over 12 weeks which will develop into 5 performance based projects starting in either September 2011 (Phase 1) or January 2012 (Phase 2).

The production of live dance will culminate in a series of district dance events (Jan – July 2012) as well as the county showcase in July/August 2012.

The performance based projects will be supported by a range of outreach workshops which will engage with communities across Staffordshire and provide appropriate participation events which will recruit dancers for the project.

Assistant Dance Artist Opportunity - Shropshire

An exciting dance and digital media project is being developed as part of the plans for 2012 in Much Wenlock. As part of this project there is an opportunity for an assistant dance artist to work alongside experienced professional dance artists Toby Norman-Wright and Sonia Sabri, and digital media artists from The Hive and Igloovision. The project will involve working with young people from Primary and Secondary Schools and community groups from across Shropshire.

There will be a research and development phase for this project during the week of 23rd May. Interested dance artists are invited to write an expression of interest to apply to be part of this research and development phase, and potentially the wider project if funding is successful. A fee of £175 per day for two days will be paid for the research and development phase. This fee is inclusive with no additional travel or other expenses paid. Activity will take place in Much Wenlock and Craven Arms. Applicants must have access to their own transport.

DanceXchange (dx), in partnership with Regional Dance Agencies DanceFest, Dancescape and Dudley Performing Arts, is leading on a substantial new Outdoor Dance Programme created for public spaces around the West Midlands from Summer 2011 to the end of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Autumn 2012. The project forms a major strand of the Dancing for the Games programme, connecting people with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games through dance.

Breathe the Beat, Digital Project
Breathe the Beat is a unique digital project that encompasses both online and offline elements led by international artist, Salah. This will take the form of a specially created website that will contain online content featuring video materials and tutorials teaching the user cutting-edge, evolutionary street dance and hip-hop moves – as well as physical Roadshow and trailblazer events.

DanceXchange are seeking up to 6 experienced hip-hop dance tutors from the West Midlands to deliver wrap-around participatory activities for Breathe the Beat, in each of the six sub-regions of the region (Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire, Worcester & Hereford, Dudley & the Black Country, Shropshire, Stoke & Staffordshire).

Ideally practitioners will be working as freelance artists, so this work can fit alongside their current activity. Dance tutors would need to have their own public liability insurance and be willing to undertake a CRB if they are not already checked.

Trinidad’s MacFarlane is no stranger to collaborative ventures, as a self-taught, self-made artist best known for his work as Carnival Designer, Artistic Director, Band Leader and five times successive winner of Carnival Band of the Year. On invitation from Imagineer, MacFarlane presents his lifetime involvement, passion and contribution to preserving and developing the tradition and art of Carnival.

New classes for Spring with Motionhouse Dance Theatre

Motionhouse will be running a range of classes for children of all ages and abilities over the next few months. The company will be organizing two 8 week contemporary dance courses for over 16s and Easter courses for children aged between 5 and 13 in their Leamington Spa Studio.

The Contemporary Beginners class offers the opportunity for over 16s to learn fun routines and short sequences as well as develop some basic lifting and partnering skills.

The Contemporary Advanced class is open to anyone with experience in dance and will be challenging and high-energy. The course will concentrate on developing fast-paced sequences and floor work as well as lifts, catches, jumps and some acrobatics.

The Contemporary classes will be running every Thursday from 24 March until 12 May 2011, with the beginners class running from 6.30pm – 7.30pm and the advanced class running from 7.30pm – 9.00pm.

Motionhouse have also devised classes to keep local youngsters entertained over the Easter break. The FunDance course for 5 – 9 year olds will help increase the participants’ confidence and develop their rhythm and musicality. The StreetDance course, which has been designed with 10 - 13 year olds in mind, will be an energetic exploration of contemporary dance inspired by street moves. The Easter courses will be running on Wednesday 13 – Friday 15 April and Monday 18 – Wednesday 20 April 2011. The content and theme of the classes will be different each week, so participants can attend both courses safe in the knowledge that they’ll be learning new things.

Sport 4 Life are looking for a highly skilled Dance Instructor to deliver their Us Girls project - a structured programme of dance classes that aims to support women aged 16-25 years old to get active. Classes will focus on providing women with a medium-high impact cardio-vascular workout, while simultaneously having fun learning dance moves in a group setting. The project will consist of a mix of some or all of hip-hop classes, street dance classes, bollywood, salsa-cise classes, and zumba classes depending on the speciality and expertise of the chosen instructor.

Classes will be delivered across the city of Birmingham in a range of school and community venues, and will take place at weekends, evenings, and during the day. Finding playfulness in our dancing through exploration into experiential anatomical themes, touch and movement and a sensory awareness into our physical structure and patterns can highlight our potential to move 3 dimensionally.

Emphasis on afternoon workshop....
Creating a learning context to explore the performing qualities of the work through compositional and creative tools can be further developed. Time will be dedicated to sharing and observing others as they move. As a starting point Andrea will draw from her current performance piece WALKING WITHIN as an opportunity to deepen compositional and creative practice.

The 2 full day workshop costs £40 and will take place in the Ellen Terry Building for Performing Arts, which is in the City of Coventry. The mornings are available for £25 but the afternoons are only available as part of the full 2 day package.

This weekend is open to people interested in and with significant experience in movement, improvisation and performance. The weekend will propel from an openness and curiosity to explore.

Biography
Andrea Buckley works as an independent dance artist, whose experience extends over 20 years, performing teaching and creating work in various professional contexts to include the wider community and is currently working with Siobhan Davies. She has worked with MacLennan Dance & Company, Rosemary Lee, Gill Clarke, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark-Smith and Deborah Hay.

Her primary research draws upon an extensive range of improvisation and contact skills as a way to continue to develop an awareness of the moving body and expand a repertoire of composition. With support from The Rebecca Skelton Fund and Dancers’ Career Development Andrea is currently studying Rolfing.

Committed to work taking place in the North West of England, Andrea is a founder member of Liverpool Improvisation Collective (LIC); initiating workshops, festivals and performance projects, they have a designated artist led space at the Bluecoat, Liverpool. Andrea's current performance project Walking Within - episode III is in collaboration with film artist Daniel Williams and composer/musician Jamie McCarthy.

A lead dance artist is required to lead weekly sessions with an integrated dance group for adults with and without disabilities in Bidford on Avon. The lead artist will also be required to Mentor an emerging artist for the duration of the contract (May 2011 to Feb 2012).

hft is a charity that supports people with learning difficulties across England. They support people with a range of abilities and needs from profound and multiple physical and learning disabilities to those with a mild learning disability. They provide support for people in their own homes via a supported living service and also through registered residential care, and a Day Opportunities service that enables people to access the local community. Some of the people hft support engaged in a previous dance project run by Warwickshire County Arts Service and found it enormously beneficial and great fun. So they are pleased to be working in partnership with
Warwickshire County Council on this BLF funded project.

The project aims to:
1. Explore and extend the movement, choreographic experience of adults with learning and/or physical disabilities and people living in the local community.
2. Develop personal and social skills including confidence, team building and communication.
3. To provide the opportunity for an emerging community dance practitioner to be mentored by an experienced dance artist in the area of dance and disability and towards becoming Group leader/choreographer.

Project Description
hft are seeking a lead dance artist to work one half day per week running dance & choreographic sessions on Thursdays morning 10.15- 12.45 for 30 weeks and who will mentor to an emerging dance artist. They expect up to 16 people to take part in each session (this will include people with learning disabilities supported by Hft and people with learning or physical disabilities from other social care settings, care staff and members of the local general community). Project monitoring will be designed and delivered by Hft with the support of the lead and the emerging dance artists.

At the end of each term a short informal showing will enable participants to share achievements
with family, friends and staff (a possible venue of a local college is presently under negotiation).
The emerging dance artist is a member of staff from hftBidford-on-Avon, South Warwickshire
(border) and a dance graduate, and the Lead Artist will support her to extend her knowledge, skills and confidence enabling her to gradually take on more leadership and responsibility for the group activities and by Week 24 we envisage that she will be delivering the dance sessions observed, guided and supported by the lead dance artist. The mentor relationship will be supported by Dancescape.

Lead Dance Artists’ main responsibilities:
• Lead weekly dance sessions for the group
• Act as Mentor to Emerging Dance Artist and meet at the end of each session to discuss observations, learning objectives etc
• Choreograph and devise a short performance to be shared at the end of each term
• Support monitoring & evaluation of the project.

Following 21 highly successful years producing some outstanding musical shows, the Oakengates Theatre @ the place Summer Project is set to get bigger and even better with two fantastic new musical shows in 2011. After record-breaking participant numbers in 2010, the time has come to offer even more young people the opportunity to take part in a show-stopping, high-energy, professionally-produced theatre show.

The project has been expanded into two age-appropriate productions. This new and improved format will provide a richer enhanced experience and greater opportunity for all participants.
50 8-12 year olds will be performing 'Gel – slicker than Grease' and 'Our House – A London Love Story' will be performed by 60 13-21year olds

DIGITAL DANCE ARCHIVES CHOREOGRAPHY COMMISSION: CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Digital Dance Archives (DDA) project is a collaboration between the University of Surrey and Coventry University. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project aims to produce a visually exciting platform to host online dance archives in order to promote and encourage dialogue and exchange between dance artists, researchers, teachers, students and dance audiences.

As part of the project development, the researchers at Coventry have been talking to dance artists about their experiences of using and working with digital dance archives. The project will look to extend this work by giving dance artists an opportunity to work in the studio with the DDA development site, to develop a choreographed response to the content and provide feedback about the experience. For this reason dance artists are invited to apply for an opportunity to make a short dance work in direct response to the archive collections to be hosted on the DDA platform, for sharing at a workshop event in Coventry in March.

CHOREOGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS

There will be one commission to be directly informed by the contents of the DDA collections (see www.dance-archives.ac.uk for more on the collections) but is open to interpretation by the choreographer/s; the final form of the presentation is also open to interpretation, within the resources available.
There is a fixed fee available – solo artists or groups can apply.
The choreographic process must be made available in some tangible form, in effect become an ‘archival document’ in its own right, for inclusion in the DDA as a virtual 'scrapbook’ (thereby making use of the DDA Scrapbook tool)
The commissioned work will be performed to an invited audience of artists, researchers, teachers and students as part of a wider workshop event at Coventry University on Wednesday 23 March, 2011

STIPEND & SUPPORT

The chosen project will receive a £600 stipend plus a £20 per diem (max 7 days) – other materials/costume to be funded from the fixed fee
Studio space will be made available in Coventry for up to six days, if required, 15th – 22nd March (not 17th or 21st)
Videographer (for documentation) to be available for ½ day – other video/photo/text documentation is the responsibility of the choreographer/s

Season's Greetings from Dancescape!

What a busy year 2010 has been…..

Back in March, Dancescape received a Grants for the Arts award for The Journey, which will allow us to create lots of opportunities for young dancers, emerging and professional artists over the next two years.

In June we had the first Movin’ On Up careers event at Coventry University, and Beyond Boundaries at Warwick Arts Centre, where we teamed up with Dancefest for an opportunity for youth dance groups from across the sub region to perform alongside groups from Herefordshire and Worcestershire – and while they were there, we asked the dancers to create a short advert for the launch of Dance Box, our young people’s dance network, which can all be seen on facebook!!

This Autumn young people from across the sub region have been able to see a range of professional dance performances through Dancescape’s venue partnerships, and have now sent us their reviews of the shows, which can all be read at your leisure on the Dance Box Reviews blog. At Bounce!10 in October, 8 youth dance groups from Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire performed to a near-on full house at Solihull Arts Complex. One of the groups performing was Dancescape’s Rugby Youth Dance Company, whose members have had a busy and exciting time this year getting involved with Godiva Awakes, Imagineer Productions’ large scale project for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Dancescape has continued to support professional dance artists in 2010 with bespoke advice and one to one surgeries, networking events and professional development opportunities. We’re also really pleased to be working in partnership with Coventry Performing Arts Service and Solihull Arts Complex to offer the first of our Apprenticeships, whereby Nick Smith and Becky Foster are being mentored by local professional artists whilst undertaking a school’s tour (Nick) and leading a class for 4-7 year olds (Becky).

What’s in store in 2011…….

Next year looks set to be just as busy with lots more opportunities to look forward to. The second phase of Boys Dancing will be getting started with performance projects in schools, youth centres, PRUs and a prison across the region led by a team of professional male dance artists – and later in the year we’ll be recruiting for male Apprentices to get on board too!

There will also be the 2011 versions of Movin’ On Up and Bounce!, as well as an event for future dance leaders and a young people’s career development programme. Dance Box will continue to keep young dancers up to date with news and opportunities along with workshops and special events, and there’ll be more go-see opportunities for young dancers to see professional shows.

For professional dance artists there will be networking and workshop opportunities and we’re excited to see the development of a sub regional Dance Maker’s Circle. Don’t forget there’s also the ongoing offer of support and advice to professional dance artists, whatever your need.

You’ll be able to stay informed about everything happening at Dancescape through our regular e-newsletters, facebook pages and blogs and we always welcome your feedback, comments and thoughts.

We’re really looking forward to 2011 and all the dance opportunities that it will bring, and to continuing to work with all our colleagues and partners.

ACE Dance and Music are looking for Dancers!

ACE dance and music are offering professional dancers the opportunity to participate in an intensive residency with internationally acclaimed Japanese choreographer Akiko Kitamura. This exciting professional development opportunity will take place at the ACE dance and music studio, the Link Dance Space, Birmingham, from 14th to 18th February 2011.

Highly admired choreographer Akiko Kitamura, formally of the Leni-Basso dance company, Tokyo, previously collaborated with ACE dance and music on their celebrated production ‘Skin’, which toured successfully both in the U.K. and abroad from 2007 to 2008. ACE dance and music are looking to build on this creative relationship and use this residency as a research and development period for their next production ‘ICE’ (working title).

Akiko Kitamura is known worldwide as a leader in contemporary dance and her work continues to tour across continents. This residency will give participants the opportunity to experience her distinct style of dance, and will offer a flavour of the production to come. In summer 2011, Akiko Kitamura will return to Birmingham to collaborate with ACE’S Artistic Director Gail Parmel and will co-produce ‘ICE’ for touring from autumn 2011.

Shropshire Council in partnership with Youth Dance England and the National Dance Teachers Association (NDTA) will be delivering a three hour mini Dance Links training session on Wednesday 5th January 2011, at the Shrewsbury Sports Village.

The free training will be delivered by a professional NDTA trainer and cover key elements of Dance Links training, which is usually a 2-day residential programme.

It will give participants working in any dance style the chance to develop their skills and experience in delivering dance in schools, both with and beyond the curriculum.

The programme will be both theory and practical and cover elements of:• Principals of best practice in dance both in and out of schools• High quality learning and teaching• Identification of your strengths and professional development needs• Contexts, practicalities and essentials of working in and out of schools• Management of resources, time and behaviour

This project requires 7 professional dance artists based in the West Midlands who are experienced in and able to teach at least one of the following dance styles:

Project description:
Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Council are currently working in partnership with DanceXchange and Youth Dance England to develop, support and champion dance for children and young people within the sub-region.

During January to March 2011, dance classes will be set up within 17 primary and secondary schools across Shropshire.

This project is designed to help enable schools who have an interest in developing dance, to set-up a regular programme of dance activity as part of their Extended Schools remit.

Aimed at all young people, from the ages of 5 to 19, the dance classes which will cover a range of dance styles and genres will take place out of school hours, over the course of ten weeks (a term). Schools will host one class per week, lasting one hour.

Each participating school will be offered a taster dance workshop, prior to the dance classes starting. These will take place during the school day and provide an opportunity to promote the classes and recruit interested participants.

Requirements:
- Dance training to higher education level or at least 2 years experience delivering dance classes. - This can include part-time work, i.e. one hour a week for 2 years.
- Have choreographic experience
- Experience in facilitating the creativity of young people

All applicants must be interested and committed to the project, be available to deliver dance after school from January to March 2011 and meet all the requirements listed.

Fee
The Dance Artists will be paid £35 per hour, for eleven sessions per school (one taster during the school day and ten classes after school). Artists may be appointed to work at more than one school. This fee is inclusive of all expenses, no additional payment will be paid for travel etc.

The artists will be appointed on a freelance basis and will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions.

Project description:
Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Councils are currently working in partnership with DanceXchange and Youth Dance England to develop, support and champion dance for children and young people within the sub-region.

During January to March 2011, teachers who deliver dance in primary schools across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin will attend a training program run by Penny Perrett, currently Advisory Teacher for Dance in Worcestershire.

The training will provide the teachers with the skills to plan and deliver high quality dance experiences for their pupils.

The partners require dance artists to work with between six and seven primary schools. They will work in partnership with the teachers who have attended the training course, supporting them in planning, delivering and evaluating their dance classes. This support will help to ensure the teachers feel confident in delivering high quality dance within the national curriculum.

Requirements:

Dance training to higher education level or at least 2 years experience working in primary schools. This can include part-time work, i.e. one hour a week for 2 years (essential).
Completed Dance Links Training or equivalent (essential) Please see further post for information on Free Dance Links Training being run in Shropshire on Wednesday 5th January 2011.
Experience of teaching dance as part of the PE National Curriculum
Have choreographic experience
Experience in facilitating the creativity of young people

- Attend free Dance Links Training, if not already dance links trained. The training will take place on: Wednesday 5th January 2011 from 1.00pm to 4.00pm at the Shrewsbury Sport’s Village.
- The training delivered by a National Dance Teachers Association trainer, will help dance artists develop their skills and experience in delivering dance in schools, both within and beyond the curriculum.
- Please note this is not the full Dance Links training which is run by the National Dance Teachers Association over two days.

- From February to March 2011, support between six and seven primary schools. Dance artists are to spend five hours working in each school; this time will be allocated as follows:
1 hour planning
3 hours delivery
1 hour evaluation

- Attend three training sessions on the following dates:

Community Dance Artist Required

Everybody Dance Now is a celebration of social dance in Wolverhampton through history and across cultures. Central Youth Theatre (CYT) is exploring the multi-cultural diversity of Wolverhampton’s history of dance. We are planning a programme of work that will be delivered in site-specific venues around the City The project will culminate in a week-long international festival in the summer of 2011.

Everybody Dance Now’ is a Dancing for the Games project inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands.

• Excellent personal dance and choreographic skills in social dance. The dance styles to be taught are likely to include: Twenties rag-time, Ballroom, Rock & Roll & Northern Soul.
• Project management and administration experience
• Evidence of previous experience of working with young people who have little or no experience of dance
• Interesting and creative ideas of how to engage community groups in a large scale high profile project.
• It would be beneficial for the post holder to be a car owner/driver.

The contract will requires the post holder to:
• Commit to working weekly on Sundays afternoons during term time, plus additional scheduled rehearsals close to the show, plus working variable freelance hours (negotiable) to deliver work with community groups, and administrative and managerial duties.
• Be available full time during the festival week from 29th July to 7th August
• Combine working from the Youth Theatre Office and from home
• Be subject to an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

This marks the opening of Moved by Decoda, a series of workshops for professional dance artists.

We will explore improvisational approaches to specific movement materials and focuses. We will work with sensation, the application of the senses, anatomical imagery and explicit movement pathways and patterns as a means to expand the potential and hone the detail and content of our dancing.

Elements of partner work will be employed as means of exploring multi directional movement and awareness as well as to stimulate and cultivate an agile and articulate relationship through our engagement with internal and external focuses. This workshop is for experienced dance improvisers and will culminate in a public sharing on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie Morrissey is a performer, teacher, director and researcher working in the UK and abroad. His teaching is informed by his own research in somatic dance practices, his performance work, and by long term working relationships and collaborations with Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Kirstie Simson, K.J.Holmes, Scott Smith, and many others. Charlie is part of Movement 12 in Brighton curating an international programme of professional development opportunities for dance artists.

Playful Physics: a contact improvisation workshop with Robert Anderson

Contact Improvisation is a dance of improvising and partnering based on the physics of touch, balance, weight, momentum, flow and resistance. In this workshop we’ll explore skills and strategies to tap our body-mind’s appetite for movement and connection. Awakening our senses and reflexes to be able to orientate through spherical space. Developing clear connections within our body, outwards into space and with other bodies. Channelling the required energy and tone in the body to glide, fly and fall with a partner. Expanding our ability to be both soft and strong, supported and supportive, receptive and responsive. The technical studies are designed to support and expand the range of possibilities in our dancing so that we can invite pleasure, play and poetry into our improvisation. The classes are open for those new to contact and for experienced dancers who want to become more attuned to the subtleties of touch, direction and intention.

Robert Anderson is an independent dance artist based in London. He teaches improvisation and contact improvisation at Rose Bruford College and in a variety of settings in the UK and abroad. Robert has been passionately involved with contact improvisation since 1996 studying with leading teachers from the US and Europe. He has studied with leading CI teachers including Nancy Stark Smith, Kirstie Simson, Martin Keogh, KJ Holmes, Andrew Harwood and Ray Chung. Robert has taught at international contact festivals in Germany, Israel, Poland, Russia, Spain and Italy and participated in co-teaching gatherings in Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Scotland, England and Austria. He was part of the organising team for CI36 in Pennsylvania (2008) and the European Contact Improvisation Teachers Exchange in Ormskirk, England (2009). He performs with Touchdown Dance and improvisation ensemble SoFt. In teaching dance improvisation Robert seeks to help students find a deeper connection with our senses, inviting pleasure, play and poetry for the dancing body.

The Great Train Dance on the Severn Valley Railway

Stepping into the Severn Valley world of trains and journeys into the past, Rosie Kay Dance Company is getting into gear to lead the region in a dance to another time.

On 23 July 2011, The Great Train Dance performers; dancers and students from throughout the region, will transform the Severn Valley Railway into a magical experience with a puzzle to solve. In a Hitchcock style thriller designed for families, this fascinating performance will soon draw all ages on the train into the world of the absurd and seduce everyone into hunting for clues.

Local heritage mixing with the allure of steam will create a surreal backdrop for this mystery. As the landscape comes alive with dancers, the puzzle of The Great Train Dance will unfold. Equipped with a map and a keen eye for unexpected goings on, record your findings until all is revealed in the finale at Highley Engine House.

The Great Train Dance is a Dancing for the Games project, funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK. The project is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. The initiative will involve upwards of 500 participants in a variety of roles and over the next few months, 16 appointed dance leaders will be encouraging local people to join in both as dancers and in the fun activities surrounding and supporting the project.

Groups will be formed from February 2011 and the happening itself will be created throughout May, June and July until the performance on 23rd July during the Severn Valley Railway's 'In Bloom' season.

"Steam trains have always been a big part of my family life so it's very exciting for me to be creating a unique dance around the Severn Valley Railway. It is an ambitious but easily accessible project which everyone can get involved in in some way. The work is part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and it's going to be fun as well as an opportunity to do something completely different. It's got national as well as regional appeal, from train enthusiasts to people who have maybe never visited the railway or seen a steam train up close before." Rosie Kay

Dance Tutors wanted!

Castle Bromwich Youth & Community Centre are looking for a new dance tutor to enhance their peer led Break & Street dance sessions on Thursday evenings. There are 20 -46 young people who regularly attend and they are seeking an enthusiastic teacher to assist.

In order to apply for the role of the dance tutor, artists can book to give a free taster session any Tuesday between 6-8pm or Thursday between 7-9pm up to the first week in December. They will be judged on style, interaction with young people, ability to lead the group, and dance skills. These sessions will be recorded and the young people will decide who they would like to employ for 10 x 1hr session during Jan - March 2011.
