New adult dance classes in Kenilworth
Decoda is offering dance classes for adults in Kenilworth, starting in September 2011.
The classes will offer a range of release based approaches to movement practice, taught by experienced and qualified dance practitioners.
Classes are open to all levels of experience.
Cost:
£5 per class
£22.50 for 5 classes
£40 for 10 classes

Cre8us have commissioned two of our Creative Agents to develop a legacy record which captures the Creative Practitioner's significant role in the Creative Partnerships' programme. We want to provide guidance and insight for those wishing to learn from these experiences in the future.
The work on this is already underway but as this is about Practitioners...we want to hear from you!

Choreographer and dancer Joe Moran leads Questioning Dance, an investigative choreographic workshop arising from his renewed enthusiasm for movement and dance within choreographic practice. In his work Joe is currently considering the apparently mutually exclusive relationshipbetween 1) choreographic formalism and conceptually driven dance and 2) full-bodied, unmediated dancing. This workshop is intended to be a laboratory opportunity to explore these concerns. It is open to choreographers, makers and dancers with a strong interest in the creation and development of movement. Questioning Dance will investigate detailed somatic approaches to develop movement, as well as techniques to analysis, test and refine movement. It will also question how we shape and extend material through choreographic structuring.

Moving Between will explore space and support; attention and action; form and freedom. Independent dance artist Lucia Walker brings her interest in the way movement exploration, awareness practices and play can provide a ‘common language’ which lies beneath different cultural experiences and styles of dance. This weekend intensive offers dancers an opportunity to connect to their own dancing, to connect to physical forces such as gravity and momentum, and to move and play.

Dance Transformations Symposium
Dance Transformations: Developing Choreographers
Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE) Coventry University
Wednesday 19th October 2011, 10am - 5pm
Dance Transformations is a two-year inclusive artist-led development programme in the West Midlands, for emerging dance artists to explore choreographic ideas, led by Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company.
The Symposium is an opportunity for dance artists, teachers, researchers, project managers and arts leaders to come together to find out more about the unique approach and processes of the Dance Transformations programme and how this might inform your own professional practice. We will discuss the broader issues that are impacting on inclusive dance companies and individual dance artists with and without disabilities, with the aim to identify a committed group with ability to influence sector development. We will be asking ‘what does it mean to be an independent disabled dance artist with ambitions to create work in the current climate?'
The day will include sharing of interim film and research, presentations of work in progress by the Transformations artists and an opportunity for open discussion. A panel of experts in the field of inclusive dance will participate in the day to stimulate thought about the broader context for inclusive dance in the UK. The panel includes Luke Pell, Head of Learning and Development, Candoco Dance Company; Lisa Craddock, Programme Manager, Professional Development, Foundation for Community Dance; and Louise Portlock, Education Associate, Gloucestershire Dance.
Dance Transformations is managed and delivered by Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company in partnership with Coventry University’s ICELab; (Institute for Creative Enterprise) and with the support of DanceXchange (dx), all of whom have a stake in providing enhanced opportunities for disabled dance artists in the region. Ultimately Dance Transformations aims to provide a unique environment that empowers emerging artists to investigate dance making.
Dance Transformations is a Dancing for the Games project inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands.

Emerge is collaborating with Imagineer Productions to bring you Carnival - the meaning of mas with guest speaker Brian MacFarlane.
International award-winning master designer and carnival mas maker Brian MacFarlane joins Imagineer Productions in a unique collaboration leading up to the world premiere of Godiva Awakes* in 2012. Trinidad’s MacFarlane is no stranger to collaborative ventures, as a self-taught, self-made artist best known for his work as Carnival Designer, Artistic Director, Band Leader and five times successive winner of Carnival Band of the Year. On invitation from Imagineer, MacFarlane presents his lifetime involvement, passion and contribution to preserving and developing the tradition and art of Carnival.
Come along to share your creative ideas, meet potential collaborators or just meet people from other artforms. This event will be hosted at Ellen Terry Building, Coventry University, Jordan Well, Coventry City Centre. Morning workshops…
Finding playfulness in our dancing through exploration into experiential anatomical themes, touch and movement and a sensory awareness into our physical structure and patterns can highlight our potential to move 3 dimensionally.
The Landscape of the Body, Volume, Weight, Spirals & Support will provide beginning markers.
Emphasis on afternoon workshop....
Creating a learning context to explore the performing qualities of the work through compositional and creative tools can be further developed. Time will be dedicated to sharing and observing others as they move. As a starting point Andrea will draw from her current performance piece WALKING WITHIN as an opportunity to deepen compositional and creative practice.
The 2 full day workshop costs £40 and will take place in the Ellen Terry Building for Performing Arts, which is in the City of Coventry. The mornings are available for £25 but the afternoons are only available as part of the full 2 day package.
This weekend is open to people interested in and with significant experience in movement, improvisation and performance. The weekend will propel from an openness and curiosity to explore.

Biography
Andrea Buckley works as an independent dance artist, whose experience extends over 20 years, performing teaching and creating work in various professional contexts to include the wider community and is currently working with Siobhan Davies. She has worked with MacLennan Dance & Company, Rosemary Lee, Gill Clarke, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark-Smith and Deborah Hay.
Her primary research draws upon an extensive range of improvisation and contact skills as a way to continue to develop an awareness of the moving body and expand a repertoire of composition. With support from The Rebecca Skelton Fund and Dancers’ Career Development Andrea is currently studying Rolfing.
Committed to work taking place in the North West of England, Andrea is a founder member of Liverpool Improvisation Collective (LIC); initiating workshops, festivals and performance projects, they have a designated artist led space at the Bluecoat, Liverpool. Andrea's current performance project Walking Within - episode III is in collaboration with film artist Daniel Williams and composer/musician Jamie McCarthy.

Sonia Sabri Company are a UK based dance company with an international reputation for creating exciting work which explores new facets of Indian Kathak dance. Our upcoming production, Kathakbox, introduces Urban Kathak, a meeting of Kathak dance and hip-hop culture. Spoken word, rap, beatbox, global rhythms, street dance, breaking and Kathak combine in a performance that is literally ‘out of the box’.
Kathakbox’s final phase of development will be from December 2010 – February 2011, comprising devising and rehearsal. We are seeking a recent graduate in dance to join us for this exciting and crucial period, with the following opportunities for personal & professional development:

- Working with four other dancers, a beatboxer, a table player and spoken word artist, as each artist ventures into daring zones.
- Gaining experience of all sides of creating a touring production: dance, music, costume, lighting, tech week, management/pr (according to interest)
- A day of mentoring/support for the graduate’s own work/areas of interest, with choreographer Sonia Sabri
- Attending company classes free

We would like to hear from dancers with the following qualities:
- Training to BA level in Contemporary Dance (experience/understanding of additional dance styles e.g. hip-hop/kathak/street also desirable)
- Female, maximum height 5 feet 2 inches
- An open mind and can-do, confident attitude. All artists in Kathakbox will be exploring new territory and working outside their accustomed comfort zones!
- Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a team
- West-Midlands based, as no travel expenses can be provided
- Interest in additional aspects of creating and touring productions, eg tech, management, marketing, social media
Salary: Unpaid
Duration: 6th December 2010 – 18th February 2011 (9 weeks)
Location: devising and rehearsal will take place at mac, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, and any additional activities at Sonia Sabri Company’s nearby offices.

New exhibition premieres dance works featuring Guillem, Forsythe and De Keersmaeker
From the Inside: performance, screen and the gallery space at Rugby Art Gallery & Museum is open now and runs until 31 October 2010.
The exhibition includes works by Peter Welz & William Forsythe, Thierry De Mey and Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Jonathan Burrows, Sylvie Guillem and Adam Roberts and Ulrike Rosenbach. Additionally the film, Jackson Pollock, 1951 by Hans Namuth and Paul Falkenberg is available in an education space. The film has been made available courtesy of Concord Media. It includes the first exhibition of Peter Welz and William Forsythe’s work whenever on on on nohow on airdrawing, 2004, as an "in the round" installation. Installed on five huge screens, the life-size projections of Forsythe, fully immerse the viewer in the work, unsettling the space shared by both Forsythe’s body and the audience/viewer. It is also be the first time that the Guillem /Burrows/ Roberts film Blue/Yellow, 1995, has been exhibited as an installation. Installed in this way Guillem’s performance delivers powerful readings about ‘presence’.
Through a pairing device, this exhibition explores how time, screen space and installation space are examined and experienced in differing ways through installation works which use moving image with dance and performance emanating from different disciplines and languages. It foregrounds the dialogue created between the space and the viewer, and the physical relationship between movement, language, image, frame and space in works emanating from both the performing and the visual arts. The exhibition is curated by Portland Green.

Making Space is a process-led residency that takes place alongside the Summer Dancing festival 2010. The residency offers time and space to support artists to further develop and investigate a particular area of interest.
Making Space takes place in the three weeks prior to Summer Dancing (4-26 June) and full participation at the festival (June 25-3 July) is included in the package. The residency provides space, materials, accommodation and where appropriate other dancers to support the artists' enquiry. The emphasis of the programme is on process although there will be performance opportunities or studio based sharings where appropriate. There is the possibility for mentoring from a Summer Dancing 2010 artist.
Applications are welcomed from artists working with movement as their primary practice, but acknowledge that this may manifest in a variety of forms such as new media, performance and live art. Making Space welcomes applications from artists based in the West Midlands, UK and internationally.
Submissions should express an interest in two or more of the following:
Somatic informed work.
Process-led practices.
Work that is informed by site or environment.
An openess to collaborations and/or interdisciplinary performance.
An interest in developing a discourse about own working process and aesthetic.

This postgraduate certificate is a Continuing Professional Development course for postgraduate experienced dancers and actors moving into a new area of work namely dance theatre, introducing new techniques that combine vocal, kinaesthetic and visual skills and responses. The focus of the course will be to understand and explore Vardimon’s method and approach of creating physical theatre work and will be taught by Jasmin Vardimon and the collaborators of the Jasmin Vardimon Company.Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells, award-winning director/choreographer Jasmin Vardimon is one of this country’s leading pioneers of dance theatre. Combining physical theatre, dance, text, music and innovative technologies, Vardimon is renowned for her acute observations of human behaviour, distinguished by her beautifully detailed movement, insightful humour and social relevance.The aim of the course is to engage students in practical methods and skills in the creation of physical theatre practice.You will experiment with a variety of aspects of the physical theatre work to include movement, dynamic speech, object integration, media usage and sound. Teaching will primarily be through experiential workshops with students given tasks for improvisation and exploration. The workshop will promote dynamic activity; with time to both experiment practically and to respond with detailed feedback.The dramaturgy of physical theatre will be built upon throughout the course so that aspects of developing narrative, working with text and voice, set, props or multi-media will be incorporated.Towards the end of the training period you will work to create studio-based compositions which reflect the physical and vocal skills that have been developed.The course will consist of 8 intensive weekend workshops and a full-time week in June.Audition Date:Thursday 8th April 2010. Artist Network Meeting, Tuesday 29th September 2009
The recent Dancescape Artist Network Meeting was held at Solihull Arts Complex prior to ACE Dance performing their new tour piece, 'Switch'.
I positioned myself in the cafe bar to welcome the artists (with tea's and coffee's!) and I was soon joined by Sioda Martin, a Leamington based dance artist. Sioda updated me on her current work with nutkhut's Bollywood Steps project on which she was working as an artist, and also her new class planned for this Autumn in Leamington at Stone Monkey Studios. Sioda is working on an intriguing combination of contemporary dance and Ashtanga Yoga for her new class - which sounds exciting! Just after this, we were joined by Solihull based artist Sarah-Jane Carter-Dornan, then Kath Kimber-McTiffen and Kate Mason. As each artist came in, they were quizzed about their current news and work (with added appreciative noises from the group!).
As the last person who entered then new nothing about what anyone else was up to, we went round the circle and each gave a short update of our current ventures. Kath updated us on her plans for inter-generational work, Sarah-Jane asked the groups advice on some of her thoughts about her career plans, and Kate updated us on her progress with her company and informed us of her funding success (yay!). We chatted about the upcoming U.Dance Professional Development Training which is to be held by Dancescape in November, and also the current Dance and Health initiatives that are happening in the region, including the Dance and Health conference and network event at DanceXchange on the 9th November.
As an artist it was great to feel part of a network of practising artists.....it gave me inspiration.... and if I admit quite a warm and fuzzy feeling! The process of talking through ideas, amibitions and current exciting ventures helped to reinforce the feeling of being proud to be working as a dance artist in the Midlands. I think (and hope) that the other artists felt the same!
After our meeting we all enjoyed ACE Dance and Music's brand new touring piece, Switch. It was a great way to finish off a very artistic and dance focused evening.
